Requirements for Becoming a DEA Agent

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is responsible for enforcing laws and regulations that revolve around the flow of drugs and narcotics in, out and inside the Unites States. They work with both the CIA and FBI in coordinating investigations concerning the control of drugs.  The DEA is also responsible for preventing international smuggling and illegal overseas activity like money laundering.  This is an exciting career that provides lots of room for advancement but as a DEA agent expect lots of hard and challenging work. 

  • You'll want to start by obtaining a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field. This will take a few years and speed up the process when you actually apply for a job. A GPA of 2.95 or higher is necessary. To earn the required degree, simply take a look at one of these top accredited universities at the bottom of this page.

After receiving your degree, there are other requirements you'll need to be aware of:

  • You'll need to meet the mandatory qualifications:
    • 21-36 years old at time of application
    • U.S. Citizen.
    • Valid U.S. driver's license.
    • Regular color vision.
    • 20/20 vision in one eye, and at least 20/40 in the other. If you wear glasses, your vision must be at least 20/200 without corrective lenses.
    • Sharp hearing acuity.
    • Ability to lift at least 45 lbs.
  • Find your local office by visiting the DEA's web site. Schedule to attend an orientation session. Wear business attire to the orientation and bring a valid driver's license or military ID.
  • Complete hiring process. This is a nine step process that could possibly take more than a year. You will be required to pass a:
    • drug test
    • polygraph test
    • psychological assessment
    • background check
    • medical exam
    • written assessment
    • rigorous physical task test
  • Now you'll just need to wait for a response and be prepared for an exciting career at Drug Enforcement Administration.
