Forensic Nursing Career Info and Requirements

The health care industry is always expanding and creating new fields of work.  Forensic nursing is one of these careers that have grown out of it.  A forensic nurse is responsible for collecting and preserving evidence while busily at work treating a patient’s wounds.  They are also responsible for documenting that evidence and analyzing it in various reports.  If this is a career that you are interested in pursuing, you will definitely need to be levelheaded and be able to remain calm under pressure. Victims of violent crimes are often brought into the ER and forensic nurses will have their team on standby ready to devote the necessary attention and care to conduct thorough investigations.  It may be on an abusive crime, a gunshot victim or a victim of sexual abuse; because of this forensic nurses need to be attentive to the body language of the victim as well as what is recovered from a victim’s body.

  • After you earn the (RN) Associates degree, you can move forward and earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN), or a Registered Nurse degree from an RN Diploma Program. You can also just complete this degree from one of the accredited universities here. After you finish the nursing program,you need to pass the National Council Licensure Exam in order to obtain a nursing license and be licensed by the state of practice.
  • You'll need to decide on a specialty such as a correctional nursing expert, forensic psychiatric nurse, forensic investigator, forensic clinical nurse expert, forensic gerontology specialist, legal advisor and consultant, sexual assault examiner and death investigator.
  • Then you'll finally need to earn a certification to demonstrate your knowledge and professional commitment to your career.
