Requirements for becoming a paralegal

A Paralegal works for a law firm and manages several responsibilities. They draft most legal documents for lawyers, handle preliminary interviews of clients and are responsible for performing research on legal codes and judicial decisions that may be relevant to their firm’s cases. In recent years, lawyers have transferred many of their traditional tasks over to their legal assistants. This shift has increased the need for legal assistants.

There are no set prerequisites to become a paralegal because most are hired right out of college with little or no experience, but the basic rule of thumb is: the more you know about law the better.  A degree in paralegal studies provides a firm set of groundwork for a firm to hire you.  Since a paralegal is recommended to have a fairly good knowledge of law, be sure to specialize in a certain type of law as that will increase your knowledge. Some skills you'll definitely need are:

  • Excellent writing and research ability
