What it takes to become SWAT
SWAT: Special Weapons and Tactics.
It could also stand for Significant Work and Training - because you need to be prepared to earn your way on to a SWAT team. Apart from physical challenges (and staying out of trouble) - you will need to carefully consider your training and education. While not a hard requirement, you'll find that most SWAT members will have a college degree. Often times an Associates in Criminal Justice will be the standard, but a Bachelor's may set you apart. Related to the Criminal Justice degree, any experience in the criminal justice or law enforcementfield is now a hard requirement.
The general qualifications and training needed to become SWAT are the same as a police officer.
The route to become a SWAT member looks like this.
- written exam
- Fitness test
- Firearms test
- Review board (this is where that degree comes in handy)
- Psychological Evaluation (this is where not getting into any trouble earlier comes in handy)
