Degrees for Crime Scene Investigation Careers

Extensive study, training, and experience in crime scene investigations are needed for the investigator to be proficient in the field. He/she must be well versed in areas of recognition, documentation and the recovery of physical evidence.  Having the right knowledge behind you is the key to obtaining a Crime Scene Investigator position.  There are some Investigators that may work their way up from a Police Officer to eventually become a Crime Scene Investigator, but you will need at least one of the following degrees to compete and be marketable as a candidate:

  1. AS or BS in Crime Scene Forensics
  2. AS or BS in Criminal Justice
  3. AS or BS in Forensic Science
  4. BS in Chemistry
  5. BS in Biology

Sometimes the specific position that interests you may branch out from a Crime Scene Investigator. (Ex: Forensic photographer)  This may require formal training so you will need to check out your local colleges and universities for classes revolving around you position of choice.
