Extensive study, training, and experience in crime scene investigations are needed for the investigator to be proficient in the field. He/she must be well versed in areas of recognition, documentation and the recovery of physical evidence. Having the right knowledge behind you is the key to obtaining a Crime Scene Investigator position. There are some Investigators that may work there way up from a Police Officer to eventually become a Crime Scene Investigator, but you will need at least one of the following degrees to compete and be marketable as a candidate:
- AS or BS in Crime Scene Forensics
- AS or BS in Criminal Justice
- AS or BS in Forensic Science
- BS in Chemistry
- BS in Biology
Sometimes the specific position that interests you may branch out from a Crime Scene Investigator. (Ex: Forensic photographer) This may require formal training so you will need to check out your local colleges and universities for classes revolving around your position of choice.
