Most private detective agencies are small.  There is little room for advancement within the ranks.  Usually working as a private investigator in an agency, in time, will provide advancement in the form for more money and the increase of assignments given.  Private detectives and investigators held about 45,500 jobs in 2008. About 21 percent were self-employed.  Many of these investigators do this as a second job.  Due to the age of the computer that we are presently in, the need for private detectives is increasing.  There are increasing concerns due to criminal activity as identity theft, e-mail harassment, and illegal downloading of copyrighted material.  Be sure to get yourself prepared to face some hefty competition.  Private investigation usually draws tons of qualified people with skillful individuals.

  • Computer forensic investigator: Specialize in the recovery, analyzing, and presenting of data from computers for use as evidence (recovering e-mails and deleted passwords).
